Name: Dean Location: London Date of Holiday: Jan 08
Had a fantastic time on the slopes in Alpe d'Huez, the snow was perfect
and plenty of runs for all abilities. The green runs near the resort
are great for beginners, whilst venturing up on the Marmottes bubble
or DMC will take you to some challenging blues, reds or blacks
(depending on where you get off). The pistes are very well maintained
and regularly snow cannoned - even when nature is already laying
heaving quantities of snow.
Stayed in the Résidence Pierre & Vacances Les Bergers, which is
classified as a 4 star apartment block - occupying rooms up to 4 and 6
people. The overall quality of the hotel was good, the rooms were clean
(although you have to clean the rooms yourselves at the end of the
week), well equipped, and offered a nice bar, free sauna, swimming
pool, gym and ski locker facilities. "Ski to door" isn't entirely true,
unless you count the 100m walk to the slopes but never caused us any
problems, even with ski / snowboard boots and equipment.
Après ski can be very expensive, with most establishments charging an
eye watering 7 / 8 EUR a pint! Food is also expensive but the quality
generally allowed me to overlook this. Places to check out are Smithy's
(for Tex Mex), Lilly's Irish Bar, Freeride (even if its only for the
slide to the toilet) and Lounge 21 for the most sublime food and great
service.
All in all, I would go back to Alpe d'Huez without hesitation; just
need to save up a lot more to cope with the extortionate drinks prices.
